About the event
It's August 1983 and Kelvedon Hatch is being inspected by members of the Government, County Council, Armed Forces and Civil Service to ensure they are familiar with the site and that everything is ready for them, should the worst happen.
East and West tensions are high after Reagan branded the Soviet Union an 'Evil Empire' and announced his plan to develop technology to intercept enemy missiles. The media dub this plan 'Star Wars' and the world is the closest it has been to a nuclear crisis since Cuba.
Closer to home Thatcher's Conservative party have been re-elected in a landslide victory, it's been a long hot summer so far and Wham!, The Police and Bananarama are doing well in the charts.
And a small but enthusiastic anti-nuclear protest group have also got wind of the bunker inspection...
